Service automation vs business automation

Business automation moves information between internal systems: invoices, approvals, CRM updates. Service automation changes the delivered experience: how fast a customer gets an answer, how clear the scope is, how quickly a failure is recovered.

Different scoreboards

Business automation is measured in hours saved internally. Service automation is measured in response time, completion rate and repeat engagement. Optimising the first while ignoring the second produces an efficient operation nobody wants to buy from.

Where they overlap

The overlap is the handoff. An automated intake that produces a brief serves both: internal teams waste less time, and the customer receives a faster, more accurate first answer.

Sequence matters

Automate the customer-facing handoff first, because it is measurable and reversible. Internal process automation compounds later, once the deliverables a team produces are consistent.
